August 2017

Milford VFAA has been looking forward to our visit from special guest Tony Roko, celebrated painter of expressive color portraits. If you have seen the brand labeling of Detroit's Atwater Brewery packaged products, then you are familiar with Tony's catching artwork. Tony shared his personal story and the inspiration that gave him a path as an artist, not a conventional life choice in the modern industrial Detroit area.  Random events and charged moments are behind his beautiful style and success. Most everyone could relate to at least part of his story and be encouraged. Tony's latest effort is to launch a foundation to encourage young creatives with mentorship and support to explore and grow as artists. See more about Tony Roko on Facebook or

Kristine told the group about the development of her ideas and skill as a ceramic artist, starting with a creative and resourceful exploration of nature enouraged by her parents. This influence is clear in her very unique work expressing her love of birch trees and the materials of nature. Kristine has a close relationship with Parson's Center in the Interlochen area of northern Michigan and handmade pottery techniques. Kristine lives in Ann Arbor and you may see her pottery exhibited in shows there and in Northern Michigan.

A large group intently watched and listened to the direction of successful and experienced Jill Wagoner, a Plein Aire pastel and watercolor artist who joined us for May's presentation. Its safe to say that everyone walked away inspired with new guidance or ideas or inspiration to go out and paint in the natural world. The colors outdoors will always give you much more than working from a photograph indoors. Its all about light after all. VFAA is hosting a Plein Aire event in June - see the information on the Home page.

Eric returned and provided a refresher on photography skills, specifically focused on artwork entries. His closing thought: Shoot great images! White balance is important in order to obtain the best color. Make minor adjustments and frame your image with the cropping tool before you save the file. If all of this is too much, Eric has created an excellent online class and he will also shoot your work for you. Contact:

Darcel Deneu is a fulltime and energized painter who more recently has been working on stained glass in subject matter that Detroiters and beyond can appreciate. The artist brought examples of her latest work, her book of studio portraits and paintings, and a great stillshot video of working on her large wall painting installation at the "Garage" in Northville. Darcel has works in her studio in downtown Detroit.
